Advances in AI have led to promising new opportunities to advance the UN SDGs, including SDG 4, which aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”. Giga, a global initiative by UNICEF and ITU, aims to connect every school to the internet by 2030 by leveraging AI-enabled mapping solutions. We proposed an AI-assisted school mapping and internet connectivity prediction pipeline to support data-driven infrastructure development in underserved communities. We evaluate our models in five pilot countries: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belize, Botswana, Guinea, and Rwanda. Finally, we demonstrate our end-to-end pipeline to identify new schools and predict their connectivity status within 10 districts in Botswana.

Ruth will talk about the potential of network science tools in spatial data analysis through the example of analysing global flight data before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic. This talk will cover how we have prototyped an overhaul of our current geospatial dataset pipelines. Focusing on just 4 out of our hundreds of datasets, it will cover how libraries such as Databricks Mosaic have reduced dataset generation times by upwards of 99%, and how technologies such as delta allow us to silo datasets (simplifing lineage and minimising unnecessary recalculations) right up to end user consumption where indexing supports performant joins and visualisation of data en-masse, being optimised and efficiently displayed through Carto's H3 driven front-ends. In addition, it will cover how moving to an index-geometry hybrid system can reduce storage costs relative to both raster and pure vector, and how it allows for arbitrary polygon queries to replace UPRN based queries.
